Do you have previous experience in programming Live events? If so: how would you describe the type of events that you curated?
I do have experience in curating and programming events. I find it hard to describe the type of events I organise because they varied from a three-day art festival in the harbour in Bruges (Konvooi) to an one-time experience in the Groothandelsgebouw during Motel Mozaique. The red line connecting the projects that I am involved in is that the choices that audience/participants make are the centre of attention. As a maker, my work cannot exist without a context provided by others - audiences a.k.a. participators - are my number one collaborator. At the same time I also heavily rely on the context provided by performers and, also very important, spaces.

What is your vision on the future of live events?
In general I would say I strongly believe that no what matter what societal developments take place people will always feel an urge to come together in a group and connect as human beings, reflecting on (modern) civilization and the issues and challenges it poses us. The way I experience the world is based on my social and cultural standing. As a ‘millennial’ I sometimes feel overwhelmed by the chances I’m offered; the modern narrative is that as long as you want something enough you can achieve it. Just do it. I think that this mentality plays a big role in the future of live events. Choice (or the illusion of choice) is prevalent in every aspect of society. We can order anything we want and within 24 hours it will be delivered on our doorstep. We can fly anywhere we want. We can watch any film wherever we are, play any game at any moment. We can even work when and where we want to because we are no longer bound to old the 9-5 mentality. Wish it, dream it, do it. I feel that among my peers this abundancy of choice is resulting in a new kind of mentality. Critically incorporating the concept of choice, highlighting the positive and negative aspects both in a serious and playful manner, is the future of live events.

What are your expectations of the programme?
The past few years I have worked on many different projects on a temporary basis. I would really LOVE to work with Roodkapje over a longer period of time, giving me the chance to truly develop, and experiment with my artistic framework. I expect to grow professionally within a community that challenges me and criticises my work in a constructive manner. Hopefully the programme will also help me form sustainable connections and expand my network. All in all, I hope HCL functions as the next step in my artistic (and human!) development. More concretely, I expect the chance to develop and realise my own curatorial concepts with Roodkapje’s support, learn to better connect different programmes and the city together and be taught more about various aspect of event organisation, from production to programming to marketing.

What would be your role in a team?
I can imagine that I review the role I take within projects on a case-by-case basis, jumping in wherever I can make the most impact (or learn the most about myself). That being said, I know my strength lies in curating a programme, bringing artists of various backgrounds together and thinking of the journey the audience experiences. I enjoy creating a shared mindset among different individual artists and translating this feeling to the audience. Most of all, I would be working together in a team with the entirety of Roodkapje; from programme to production to volunteers to marketing.

Introduction and motivation
Hello there dear reader,

My name is Kolijn Jagersma and I grew up in the sad town of Veenendaal. Luckily I managed to escape and make my way to Rotterdam. I was part of Hogeschool Rotterdam’s soon to be disbanded Theatermaker bachelor and I'm still studying Cultural Social Science. Three years ago I quit studying at the Theaterschool because I was introduced to the Avantgardistic State of WORM and quickly realised that the crossover between disciplines I yearned for was something would never be taught at school. After doing an internship at WORM as Assistant Programmer UBIK and S/ash Gallery I have been busy trying making a living as a practising artist by developing projects, creating performance installations and curating programmes.

I would descript myself as a curator maker. This term might need some explanation. The starting point of all almost all my projects is a concept wherein I invite others (artists, performers, audience, musicians etc.) to experiment/work. I mostly work in the format of performance installations that make use of gamification and choices.
Last year I also applied for the HCA because I love the idea of developing projects from within a community. Even though I still feel you should have chosen me for HCA there are no hard feelings. Because here I am again, applying for another open call! And I feel like a position within HCL would fit me perfectly. I love working together with various artists, balancing their needs and the needs required to produce a cohesive programme. Furthermore, I have quite some field experience with organisations of various kinds so I am used to balance out the wishes, needs and realistic possibilities of stakeholders. Being a making curator or curating maker I know both sides of the spectrum; the idealistic artistic and the realistic productional.
As I said before, I really want the chance to commit myself for a longer period of time to Roodkapje. Being part of HCL would give me the chance to elevate my professional skills to the next level.
